#LearningViaCalligraphy with Letters by Lyna

An interview with Lyna, the talent behind Letters by Lyna. We're bringing you stories from our workshop attendees to see how they took what they learned to forge their own path to success.

I've always loved design and typography, but always had horrible writing. I wanted a creative outlet that would not only allow me to release my creative energy but also improve my handwriting. I had previously attempted to learn on my own by downloading practice sheets but I knew I would get a better grasp from having someone teach me. Shortly after, I learned that a friend of mine had been lettering for a while and she suggested that I check out Sylvia’s workshop.

For now I'm not sure where I want to take my lettering but I'm enjoying the journey of figuring it out. Lettering is so satisfying so I use it as a self care routine for myself to take care of my mental health in a fun way. I started my Instagram account at first for myself to see my progress overtime. However, the messages I post are to help, inspire and empower myself as well as all of my followers.

Last year I finally decided to put myself out there and try to sell my services. I had made ornaments for friends and family and decided to let people know that I’d be selling them to see where it would go. I didn’t think it would get much traction, but it did! It even got some people interested in asking me for other services.

Eventually, one of my colleagues had requested for me to letter on a pair of skates. It was so exciting knowing that someone had trusted me and wanted to pay me for my work.

For now, many of my customers are people that I know or am familiar with in some way. But, more recently I’ve been getting to know and work with female small business owners through Instagram that have helped me with finding more customers.

I’m still trying to figure out what I can specialize in and what would work best for me. I’d like to try more hand painted projects in the near future and see where that takes me.

Regardless of what your goals are with lettering, have fun with it! I've honestly tried lettering on almost everything just to challenge myself. Make sure to practice lots!
